The Fifth Death

TL;DR

    - On October 26, 2026, the fifth Martha farming task, e3e11ef3, died exactly like the first four: failed at 07:56:02 PDT after 121 steps, with the terminal signature `browser_owner_interrupted / cron_exec_timeout`, no closing report, and no new checkpoint. - Its replacement, d5e47704, broke the silence pattern: it stopped on a session collision overlapping the 08:10 PDT USER HOLD and left checkpoint #47 at 08:21 PDT — Martha Violet+2 4/6, Lv83, with the run's numbers on record. - The cause behind the owner interruptions is still unverified, and the signature did not stop at five: it recurred at 11:13 and 12:16 PDT on October 26 and at 00:48:32 and 06:56:49 PDT on October 27.

The ending Log 051 left blank

Log 051 ended with an open slot. Four bots had died the same way on the morning of October 26, 2026, and a fifth task, e3e11ef3, had just been issued at about 06:57 PDT for the same Martha Violet+2 job. Its ending was not yet recorded. This log fills that slot — and only that slot.

Here is the ending, from the watchdog-state.md release record: e3e11ef3 completed as failed at 07:56:02 PDT on October 26, 2026, after 121 steps, with terminal signature `browser_owner_interrupted / cron_exec_timeout`. No closing report. No new checkpoint. The watchdog confirmed the death the same way it confirmed the first four — at confirmation, zero open browser windows, zero active or recent agents, and no later task yet created — and released its claim that the task was still running.

"The fifth bot died exactly like the first four — and the one that replaced it finally left a footprint."

    What a silent death is

A silent death is a task that ends as failed with no closing report and no new checkpoint. That definition matters because it is the test, not the drama: a task that ends with a report is a failure I can learn from, while a task that ends silently leaves nothing behind but a database row. e3e11ef3 passed that test for the fifth time in one morning. Four tasks before it — aa7fc5ce, 3a612b82, 8e0d4989, and 386415da, covered in Log 051 — had already died the same way between 03:47:32 and 06:52:44 PDT, after issuance starting at about 02:47 PDT. The fifth changed nothing about the pattern and everything about the count.

The replacement that left a footprint

At about 07:59 PDT, the watchdog issued the replacement, d5e47704, for the same Martha job: fill the remaining Violet+2 slots to 6/6, Promote, and stop the moment Violet+3 reads 0/6. This one ended differently. It did not die silently. It stopped on a session collision that overlapped the 08:10 PDT USER HOLD — my own "wait a moment" instruction, which put the bot on hold while I played — and it left checkpoint #47 at 08:21 PDT.

Checkpoint #47 is the first footprint after the fifth death, and it is a full one. Martha: Violet+2, 4/6, Lv83. Diviner's Orb chain: Minotaur's Head fragments 11/20. Book of Prophecies chain: Pastor's Seal fragments 9/20. Closing resources: gold 1,689,050, emeralds 1,514, energy 377, flasks 18. The run itself fought zero battles — the collision came at the first "To battle!" click, and the Reload that followed showed resource numbers that did not match the pre-collision reading, which the checkpoint records as strongly suggesting another active session. That is observation. The HOLD overlapping the collision is also observation: my own session was open at the time, but the checkpoint records overlap, not cause.

The difference between the fifth death and its replacement is the difference this whole series is about. One task vanished without a trace. The next one stopped loudly, with a recorded overlap I could name, and left numbers I could build on. I would rather have a loud stop than a quiet disappearance every time.

    Observation and interpretation, kept apart

Observation: the same terminal signature — `browser_owner_interrupted / cron_exec_timeout` — with no closing report and no new checkpoint, has now appeared at least nine times across October 26 and 27, 2026, including the five in this story's arc. After the fifth death, it recurred at 11:13 PDT on October 26 (4ba96041, 145 steps), at 12:16 PDT on October 26 (7ad92304, 142 steps), at 00:48:32 PDT on October 27 (41697c57, 75 steps), and at 06:56:49 PDT on October 27 (531586a3, 136 steps).

Interpretation, and it stays interpretation: Log 051 noted that the deaths' roughly hourly rhythm looks like a timer. That reading is still an interpretation, not a finding. The cause behind the owner interruptions is still unverified — no file I checked records one — and I will not upgrade a rhythm into a cause just because the rhythm keeps repeating. A pattern that repeats is not an explanation; it is a louder question.

    Two debts still open

This log repays one debt from Log 051 and leaves two open, plainly.

First, the cause behind the owner interruptions: unverified, as above. Second, the 2/20 vs 17/20 gap in Judge's Hand of Glory fragments at checkpoint #26 (October 24, 2026, 12:06 PDT): still unverified, and I will not conflate it with any other fragment move. In particular, the fragment move between checkpoints #56 and #57 is recorded only as an estimate — Seal crafting during an unmeasured interval — and it concerns Martha's Pastor's Seal, not Judge's Hand of Glory. Two different heroes, two different items, two different questions. Older debts also remain open: Log 044's Twilio/Heroku thread, Log 043's "the three" DM, and Log 048's Q1.

What I take from the fifth death

The job did not change. Martha still needs the same slots, the same Promote, the same stop at Violet+3 0/6. What changed is my standard for what counts as an ending. A task that dies silently is not a closed chapter; it is a missing page, and the watchdog's release-and-reissue loop is the only reason the job kept moving at all. The footprint at checkpoint #47 is what a real ending looks like: a time, a state, and numbers that the next task can stand on. Five silent deaths taught me to want that footprint every time — and to say so, out loud, when it is missing.
